ABC Cancels All My Children and One Life to Live

“According to the network, the final episode of All My Children will air this September, with One Life to Lives finale in January 2012. ABC will replace the soaps with two new shows, The Chew and The Revolution.

via ABC Cancels All My Children and One Life to Live.”

I am so sad to read this headline…cancellation of two memorable Soaps!

It was over 30 years ago that I became a fan of All My Children. At that time in my life I was working the night shift as a nurse and had to take time off due to phlebitis in my leg…a job hazard.

Never before did I have to stay off my feet and remain mostly in bed. So to wile away the day I became a ‘fan’ of daytime television…first Ryan’s Hope, then All My Children, and finally One Life to Live.

The characters became family to me…I loved Tad, Brooke, Phoebe Tyler, Joe Tyler, Benny, Joe and Ruth Martin, Kate Martin, Erica Kane, Mona Kane, Jenny Gardner, and so many, many others. I lived their happy times and their heartaches, I traveled with them and stayed at home in NYC with them

The fictional towns of Pine Valley and Llanview were feasibly just a train ride away in the nearby Philadelphia suburbs…they were beautiful towns and I could just picture the bucolic settings from my small apartment.

At times art and real life would collide right in front of me when one of the cast would come into the labor and delivery unit at the NYC hospital where I worked.

Oh… such days are forever gone… Pine Valley and Llanview will soon disappear off the television map.

My daytime ‘friends’ are getting ready to walk into the sunset as so many characters have done before them.

Their sound stages will become dark and their sets will be struck

and

I will miss all of them…thanks for the memories…farewell.
